Elsa Zarduz's figures
are both enigmatic and direct. Line and
shading translate the body across canvas'
borders. Zarduz's often leaves the faces
of her figures obscured -- a choice that
highlights the body form. Her palette of
understated earth colors and ochre fits
her strong lines and further enhances
the sinewy feel of her work. An
accomplished muralist, Zarduz shows Jose
Clemente Orozco's influence in her style
and gesture. Like Orozco, Zarduz spent
some of her formative years as an artist
in the United States at the Parson's
School of Design and the Art Student's
League in New York. Zarduz studied in La
Escuela Nacional de Artes Plasticas UNAM
Mexico and in the Instituto Allende in
Guanajuato, México. She also worked with
Master Santiago Carbonell at the
Universidad Autonoma de Bellas Artes in
Queretaro, México, and took private
lessons with Eduardo Pizarro in México
City. Her many activities include
painting with oil, drawing workshops,
sculpture in clay, wax and metal, and
even book restoration with the Museum of
Juan Pablos in Mexico City. Zarduz
participated in "A Dream with Siqueiros"
during the Biennial of Drawing of
Siqueiros in Guanajuato, Mexico. Other
painting shows include the "Painting by
the Democracia" crusade, "Between
Dreams," and "The Idea." She has
confirmed participation in Art-Miami
Fair 2004 in January. |
